If you live in Providence Arbours, there’s a good chance you’ve seen the Fernandez family from the neighboring Sarah Hall community bicycling on our streets. Chris is an avid cyclist who, along with his wife Beth, has taught the three Fernandez children a passion for the sport.
For many years, Chris has put his passion for cycling to work for “24 Hours of Booty” – a wildly popular, Charlotte-based riding event that raises money for cancer research. Named for the famous “booty” loop in Myers Park, the event concluded last night here in Charlotte with estimates that over $1 million was raised for cancer research.
The event held special meaning this year for the Fernandez family. Chris was recently diagnosed with a brain tumor and has been undergoing multiple rounds of treatment for the disease. While still on the road to recovery, Chris raised $16,000 for this year’s “booty” event and rode on the back of a tandem bike with a partner (he struggles with balance).
WBT-TV was an official sponsor for this year’s event and ran a story that featured Chris’ story. View WBT’s coverage of “24 Hours of Booty”, and the Fernandez family story, at http://www.wbtv.com/global/Category.asp?C=171828.
