Don’t be surprised to spot a fox or coyote in your backyard.
Harvey Katowitz, who serves on the Security Committee on the HOA Board in nearby Providence Plantation, recently shared the following communication with neighbors in his community.
FOX & COYOTE SIGHTINGS
Hi Everyone:
I have received several reports of homeowners seeing fox & coyote in various locations in Providence Plantation.
Below is a photo of a fox sunbathing in the back yard of a home on Wyndfield Lane. http://maps.google.com/maps?q=wyndfield+lane+charlotte+nc&oe=UTF-8&sourceid=ie7&ie=UTF8&split=0&gl=us&ei=R_UrSujPJZ-qtgfhwfmjCA&ll=35.078126,-80.763416&spn=0.017104,0.038452&z=15
Foxes are solitary animals and are usually weary of humans. Fox attacks on humans are not common but have been reported. In Nov. 2008 a jogger in Arizona was bitten by a rabid fox.
Coyotes are often attracted to dog food and animals that are small enough to appear as prey. Items like garbage, pet food and sometimes even feeding stations for birds and squirrels will attract coyotes into backyards. Coyotes are more likely than foxes to attack pets, the majority of which are dogs. Though uncommon in the Charlotte area, approximately 3 to 5 pets attacked by coyotes are brought into the Animal Urgent Care hospital of South Orange County, CA each week. Coyote attacks on humans are uncommon and rarely cause serious injuries, due to the relatively small size of the coyote.
As with all wild animals it is best to keep your distance.
